Summary: |
A wicked melodrama. Alan, a world-weary British poet who has lost his will to live, arrives at a desert roadhouse station and diner. He falls in love with the waitress, Gabby Maple, whose dream is to run off to Paris and study art. Duke Mantee (Humphrey Bogart in his first significant role) and his gang of escaped convicts take over the diner and hold everyone hostage. Alan arranges for Mantee to kill him so that Gabby can receive his life insurance, and when the police arrive, Alan is shot by Mantee in the gun battle.
